Hey, Sports Fans!

A fairly popular sport that shouldn’t be too difficult to find offered at summer camps on an outside court or maybe a gym, Badminton is an ancient game that’s traced back more than 2000 years to an extremely similar game called Battledore and Shuttlecock. Instead of racquets, the game was originally played with paddles or bats (Battledore) used to strike a lightweight feathered bulb (Shuttlecock—also called a Birdie). Other games of a great likeness were played for hundreds of years, widespread across Europe and Asian countries like China, Egypt, Greece, India, Japan, and more. It was around 1850 when officers of the British military came across a popular game in the Indian town of Poona. There, they simply called the game Poona.

Poona wasn’t played with a net, however, the British officers added one to the game when they got home and officially introduced it to England in a country estate home called ‘Badminton House’. That’s when it got the name we know for it.

Often seen as an easy leisure activity, Badminton may appear as though it’s nothing too difficult. The game takes on a different pace with a ‘ball’ so lightweight and feathery, but don’t let it fool ya! There’s plenty of skill going on in this game. Check it out:

Keep your Eye on the Shuttlecock
There’s a lot more involved in Badminton than may initially meet the eye. But extreme accuracy in hand-eye coordination is developed rather quickly with a racquet and birdie.  

Beat the Birdie
A slower moving object may create the illusion of a slower-paced game, but there’s nothing slow about chasing the birdie to the right spot in time to deliver a crushing response.

What a Racquet!
The birdie tends to take an interesting trajectory across the net which can keep the players guessing as to which way it’s going. Along with its unique movement, the birdie must be hit with careful force to send it to specific spots that will keep your opponent on the run.

Enjoy playing Badminton at your summer camp this coming season. While official games require a net and a specific court size, all you really need to have a fun time is a couple racquets, a birdie, and a friend. Have a great time and, as always, thanks for reading!

Hello all!

Welcome to the Everything Summer Camp Blog today where we have a special announcement of an exciting event being held right here and right now on the Everything Summer Camp website! Oh boy, are we thrilled about this one! Already in full swing from two days ago, Monday marked the beginning of The Great Scavenger Hunt at Everything Summer Camp!

We’re sending you all over our website, from one end to another and back again along with the occasional trip to Facebook and YouTube, in search of your next clue. Once you find these hidden clues, you need to put on your thinking cap to solve the puzzle or riddle and figure out where the next clue will be.

Some clues are puzzles—made up of images that you have to combine and link together. Those clues look something like this: Other clues are riddles. They’re just a quick sentence or two that gets you on the track for the next clue. They look more like this: You’ll notice that with each new clue you find, there’s another letter or number you’re given. There are 20 clues. Keep track of all the letters and numbers you find and, after you’ve reached the final clue, unscramble the letters and numbers to complete the scavenger hunt.

The Great Scavenger Hunt will keep going until Sunday May 9^th. Everyone that completes the hunt by then will be entered into a random drawing for Gift Cards to Everything Summer Camp. We’ll draw four winners and each winner will receive a different amount Gift Card: $500 to First Place, $100 to Second, $50 to Third, and $25 for Fourth Place.

Hey, Plant People!

Do you have an affinity for the botanical world of trees, flowers, vegetables, and everything in between? If so, then today is right up your garden alley. Today is Plant Appreciation Day—a day designated to celebrate and enjoy all the plant life around us! The plant life kingdom helps us out every day in ways that we rarely consider. Let’s take today to consider just some of those things that plants do for us every day!

All I Need is the Air that I Breathe
Plants breathe just like we do with one major exception—they don’t inhale oxygen, they inhale carbon dioxide. And they exhale oxygen! How nice for us (and them) that we inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. My sister shares her birthday with Plant Appreciation Day and, appropriately, she cares for nearly a hundred houseplants. They clean the air and boost her spirits! So much greenery tends to brighten attitude! And Happy Birthday, Kim!

Mouth-Watering Menu
So, they supply us with the air we need to breathe! That’s pretty significant. What else? How about some amazing nutritional foods that grow right out of the earth?! A staggering variety of vegetables and fruit grow from plants in all different kinds of places! Also, the animals that we eat are sustained by the wild-growing vegetation; so even if fruits and veggies aren’t your favorite, they still play a huge role in your diet!

Wood You Do Me a Favor?
As I already mentioned briefly, plants boost our spirits and brighten our attitudes. Giving us clean air is helpful for sure, but trees go above and beyond. Producing negative ions (which is essentially the energy of the earth), provides countless benefits for us like improving our mood, reducing pain, and boosting our energy. While plant life in general puts out negative ions, a walk in the woods is where you’re likely to get a noticeable dose!

Today is a perfect opportunity to get closer to the plant world. Take a woodsy hike. Buy some houseplants. Plant some seeds. Propagate a plant and give it to a friend! Give up thanks for all that plants do for us today and, as always thanks to YOU for reading!
