Honest Abraham

Posted on

Hey, Blog Buddies!

Today is February 12. It was 206 years ago today that the 16th president of the United States was born in a little town called Hodgenville, Kentucky. There’s a lot that we know about this former president from a much earlier time in our nation’s life. Pretty much everybody knows that his picture is on the penny, that he abolished slavery, or that he was an avid (and skilled) wrestler in his youth.Get honest Abe's two cents...or just one, anyway..

In observance of his birthday, however, I’d like to tell you three things that not a lot of people know about Mr. Abraham Lincoln.

1.) We all get away with calling him Honest Abe today, but if he ever caught any of us referring to him using that name, he would have put us in an arm bar (the good wrestler that he was). Well, maybe he’d go easier than that, but truth be told, he did not appreciate ‘Abe’ as a nickname.

2.) He was crazy about cats! Absolutely obsessed with them, Lincoln had an affinity with all animals, but cats above all. He was fascinated by felines and while he was in office, the official cat of the White House was named Tabby.

3.) Maybe you already knew that Lincoln was the first president to wear a beard. But did you know that he grew it at the request of an 11-year-old girl named Grace Bedell who wrote him during his campaign for presidency?

“…if you let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of [my brothers] to vote for you,” she tells him. “You would look a great deal better for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers and they would tease their husbands to vote for you Always a stoic figure, those whiskers were the suggestion of an 11-year-old girl.and then you would be President.” Lincoln wrote the girl back and promptly began growing out his now-iconic beard.

I guess it just goes to show that sometimes the best advice comes from sources that you’d least expect! Happy, birthday Abe…err…I mean, Mr. Lincoln! And, as always, thanks for reading, camp fans!

Super Bowl Sunday

Posted on

Hey, Football Fans!

Over the course of the last 50 years, the Super Bowl has taken the nation by storm! It certainly has become a leviathan of championship sporting events. Baseball may be America’s pastime, but football has quickly become the nation’s most popular sport. The 50th Super Bowl is tonight!

Excited fans have been chomping at the bit in the post-season to see who will face off in this season’s Super Bowl. Now we know the Carolina Panthers are going up against the Denver Broncos today and the excitement is through the roof!

Super Bowl L (or 50 if you don’t know your roman numerals), is bound to be a record-setting televised event! Only seven shows in the history of television have been able to draw in over 100 million viewers: there was the M*A*S*H series finale in 1983 and the other six were all Super Bowls!

Today, the Super Bowl means a packed stadium, extravagant halftime shows, and funnier commercials than you’ve seen all year. But it may surprise you to know that the first Super Bowl was nothing like the Super Bowl that we all know and love today. No, it was VASTLY different…

Empty seats were plentiful, the halftime show was put on by marching bands and flag girls, and the game was broadcast (for the first and only time) by two different networks (CBS and NBC). It’s true! The Super Bowl just wasn’t nearly as big of a deal as it is now.

The original Super Bowl.In fact, the original tapes of the game have been lost forever (recording live broadcasts was quite expensive back then, and so the networks recorded soap operas over their tapes)—that’s how small of a deal the Super Bowl was back in 1967!

With an old recording of the game having resurfaced in a dusty attic in Pennsylvania, the NFL has recently aired it as much of the game as we have (which doesn’t include the halftime show or bits of the third quarter). But it was the very first broadcast of this game in 50 years!

With this recent airing and today being Super Bowl Sunday, the frenzied Super Bowl excitement is more than it’s ever been before! Be sure you enjoy the game tonight and, as always, thanks for reading.

From camp to ‘Prison….Break’

Posted on

Hey, Summer Campers!

The world is certainly crazy about camp! From singer/songwriters to famous athletes and big-name Hollywood stars, it seems EVERYONE goes to camp! Wrongfully convicted inmates and their loyal little brothers are no exception either—at least the actors that play them, anyway! A few years back, I told you about ‘Prison Break’ star Paul Adelstein’s time at North Star Camp.

Best known for his role as Agent Paul Kellerman in the TV series ‘Prison Break’, Paul isn’t the only star of the show to attend camp. The lead role of Michael Scofield is played by Wentworth Miller who went to Frost Valley, a YMCA camp, located on 5000 acres in the Catskill Mountains, just two-and-a-half hours north of New York City.

Born in England, Wentworth’s parents moved when he was just one year old and raised him in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He had a pretty normal upbringing, attending Midwood High School and later transferring to Quaker Valley Senior High School in Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1990 a straight-A student and moved on to study at Princeton University.

A cartoonist for the school paper and also baritone for the A Capella group called ‘The Princeton Tigertones’, Wentworth’s interests were all over the map. It was during Tigertones’ shows, however, that Wentworth realized he wanted to perform in front of an audience for a living. After graduating from Princeton, he moved to California, seeking out an acting career.

He made his television debut in the cult classic TV show, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and went on to make lots of appearances in shows like ‘ER’, ‘Law and Order’, ‘House’, and—most currently—‘The Flash’. ‘Prison Break’, however, is what really boosted his career. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actor in a leading role for his lead part in the show.

Making his way to the top wasn’t always easy. In his words, it was “a long time…coming and there were a lot of upsets and a lot of failures and roadblocks, but I couldn’t walk away from it. I needed it like I needed air. It was just something I had to do.”

While he hasn’t lost interest in acting, Wentworth has been trying his hand at screenwriting and producing more so these days, writing the horror movie ‘Stoker’, released in 2013. Wentworth is obviously an individual who understands hard work and determination—two qualities that summer camp teaches.

Summer camp did good for Wentworth. What will it do for you? As always, thanks for reading, campers!
