Stuck in the Camp Sloane Bathroom Zone

Hey, Camp Enthusiasts!

Here at Everything Summer Camp, we loved getting all the wonderful camp stories everyone shared for this year’s 'Share Your Camp Story' Contest. This year turned out to be one of our best contests yet! We’re having a blast publishing each story one by one to share with our online community! Each submission is getting featured right here on the Blog!

The following post comes from Taylor P., who took the time to share a funny story from her time at Camp Sloane this summer. Check out her entry right here:

“Hey my name is Taylor and I’ve been going to Camp Sloane YMCA for 6 years now. Last year I wrote about my entire camp story across the span of 3 weeks but this year I’m choosing a specific moment to write about because there was so much that happened. This year I went to camp for 6 weeks and it was easily the best 6 weeks of my summer by far.

So anyway my funny story moment at camp. One night it was really late like 10:45 at night and I really needed to go to the bathroom. So I got up and walked to the bathroom and knocked on the door because night is the time that counselors get to take over the bathroom because campers and counselors aren’t allowed to be in the bathroom at the same time. My village director came out to tell me it was okay to go in so I went into the bathroom.

Then like 4 mins later I hear a bunch of voices that I recognize as my counselors and so I start freaking out because they definitely didn’t realize a camper was in the bathroom. So I quickly got myself sitting on top of the toilet so that the counselors couldn’t see my feet. Anyway they proceeded to sit down on the floor of the bathroom and started talking so I knew I was stuck there for a while.

About 25-30 mins later I quietly said hey guys would it be possible if I get out? One of my counselors recognized my voice and asked me how long I had been there. I just casually said 30 mins and they just went silent. They told me I could come out and I put my head down and literally sprinted out of the bathroom.

The next day I was talking to some of my friends and apparently the exact same thing had happened to them about 3 days before it happened to me. So that’s my funny story of me literally getting myself trapped in the bathroom and being too scared to try and get out for a solid half hour. That wasn’t even close to some of the more eventful things that happened at camp but it was just a funny little moment.

Camp is hands down the best way to spend my summer and I form bonds with some of the most amazing people from it and I make so many long lasting memories. Only 297 days until camp starts again and I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to go back for my 7th year at camp. As an added benefit I’m going to be a LEAD next year which is the first step towards becoming a counselor which I’m incredibly excited about. I’m in Summer 2024 at Camp Sloane!!!”

Hilarious, Taylor! Thanks for sharing this funny story with us. It’s impressive that you were able to stay quiet for that long with your counselors being none the wiser. Super funny that the same thing happened to another camper! Hopefully neither of you overheard anything you shouldn’t have! Congratulations on going into the next camp season as a Lead and working toward becoming a counselor. Some day you might have a camper ‘spying’ on you! Haha!!

A First-Timer's Camp Experience

Hey, Camp Enthusiasts!

We're thrilled by the wonderful camp stories you've shared for this year’s 'Share Your Camp Story' Contest here at Everything Summer Camp. Campers, you've truly surpassed expectations this year! These stories are great and I'm excited to continue featuring them one by one to our online community. Each submission is getting featured right here on the Blog!

The following post comes from Adrinna K., who took the time to share her first-time experiences at Camp Eagle Ridge. Dive into her submission right here:

“My name is Adrinna Keefer. I am 10 years old. I went to Camp Eagle Ridge in Wisconsin. It was so much fun. This was my first time going to camp.

At first I was scared at the thought of going to camp though I pretended I was not so my mom would not be worried. But once I got off the bus and met my counselors and bunk mates, I was very happy. Everyone was so nice.

I loved trying new things like canoeing, catching frogs, feeding an alpaca!!

My cabin was really nice. It felt like a hotel. It even had showers inside and we did not have to go to the shower house. The counselors were super nice. They even helped me braid my hair! The camp store had lots of delicious snacks. My favorite was the chocolate malt. It was my first malt. I had one every day.

I met a new friend. We have talked on the phone and she even remembered my birthday—after camp was over! Our parents have talked, and we may return to camp next year at the same time.

The only thing I did not like were the bugs. I hate bugs. But I still had a great time. I hope I can go back next summer.”

Thanks for your submission, Adrinna! It’s great to hear that you had such a great first year of summer camp (despite your initial concerns)! You must be a very thoughtful girl to keep your concerns to yourself so your mother didn’t worry! How great that you immediately felt at ease?! Way to go trying new things, making friends, and embracing the experience! Your story makes me want a malt and I hope you do return to camp next year.

P.S. I’m with you! Bugs are the worst!

'Where There's Smoke, There's Fire': Unveiling the Campfire Saying

Posted on

Hey there, Summer camp Folks!

‘Where there's smoke, there's fire.’ The roots of this phrase date back to ancient times, with its first recorded use dating all the way back to 43 B.C. That's over 2,000 years ago! But it truly gained popularity in the 16th century, and since then, it's become a common saying in the English language. Smoke, being the cloudy gray or black mixture of air and carbon that comes from something when it’s burning, is most often directly related to fire that it’s a natural assumption that if you see one the other is present.

In the literal sense, it's true that where there's fire, you'll likely see smoke. But when we use this phrase in everyday conversations, we're not talking about actual smoke or actual flames. It’s a metaphorical phrase. It's a way of saying that if there's any suspicion or evidence of something, there's a good chance it's true.

FIRE SAFETY
Campfires are a cherished tradition at summer camp. Put yourself in the shoes of a summer camper, sitting around a roaring fire, roasting marshmallows, and entertaining one another with stories. Summer camp is all about building friendships, having fun, and learning valuable life lessons. But it's also about the responsibility of taking the appropriate measures for safety.

They provide warmth, light, and a sense of togetherness. However, they also come with a set of rules and responsibilities. One of the fundamental lessons you'll learn at summer camp is fire safety. You'll discover how to build and maintain a campfire safely, ensuring that the flames stay where they belong—in the fire pit. Camp counselors and staff will teach you the importance of fire safety rules and how to prevent accidents.

Beyond the Flames
Embrace the responsibility of campfire safety, but also carry this lesson with you beyond the campfire circle. This phrase isn't just about campfires. It's a valuable life lesson. It reminds us to pay attention to the signs and take action when something seems suspicious or wrong. Trust your instincts, look out for one another, and always seek the truth. Whether it's a situation at camp, school, or in your everyday life, this phrase encourages you to trust your instincts and seek the truth.

Remember the wisdom behind this age-old phrase that gives us truth in an everyday observation and take it with you on your summer adventures and all others throughout your life. Thanks for reading, Everybody and, as always, Happy Camping!

Friday Misfortune in Ominous October

Posted on

Friday the 13th. It’s a date that on its own conjures superstitions and trepidation for many. But it becomes even more foreboding when it occurs in the month of October. Why is it that this particular combination of day, date, and month should send shivers down our spines? What’s the reason behind the eerie reputation of Friday the 13th and learn why Friday the 13th in October is considered exceptionally UNLUCKY.

Freaky Fridays
Fridays have long been considered unfavorable and associated with bad luck in various cultures. Sailors often consider setting sail on a Friday to be bad luck (possibly due to historical Friday occurrences of shipwrecks). Old English Folklore told tales of witches and other malevolent entities who were particularly active on this penultimate day of the week. Some Asian cultures associate Fridays with the dead when shrines are cleaned and offerings are made to loved ones who have passed on.

A Baker’s Dreaded Dozen
Similarly, the number 13 has garnered a sinister reputation. This fear of the number 13, known as triskaidekaphobia, has its roots in ancient history. Some suggest that it dates back to Norse mythology, where a feast in Valhalla attended by 12 gods was disrupted by the uninvited 13th guest, Loki, who caused chaos and tragedy. This apprehension towards the number 13 has persisted through centuries.

Sinister History
October's association with Halloween compounds the unease. The holiday itself revels in themes of the supernatural and people embracing eerie traditions throughout the month. This creates a backdrop of fear against which Friday the 13th in October is perceived. When a month's 13th day coincides with a Friday, it’s easy to see how people’s fear behind both elements converges and creates and intensified perception of bad luck. And the rarity of this alignment adds to the mystique, occurring only once or twice a year.

The fear that Friday the 13th instills is a complex interplay of cultural beliefs, historical events, and pop culture influences. While some may dismiss it as mere superstition, the unease associated with this date—especially in the month of October—remains deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness, ensuring that we’re all a little more careful and on edge this day. Stay safe and stay superstitious! Thanks for reading, Camp Fans!
