Stiller's Still Got It!

Posted on

Hey, Very Big Fans of Jerry!

Father of Ben Stiller, Jerry Stiller too has had great success, playing lots of roles in movies and television shows. He’s probably best known for his roles as Frank Costanza in the classic television series, ‘Seinfeld’ as well as Arthur Spooner on ‘The King of Queens’. He’s also provided a good amount of voice acting for films like ‘The Lion King 1½’, ‘Fish Hooks’, ‘Foodfight!’, and, more!

I posted about Mr. Stiller a handful of years ago. We covered his camp experience at Surprise Lake Camp in New York and reviewed his education before he made his way onto the screen. I thought we could revisit him in order to learn more about this famous funny man!

Broke as a Joke
Jerry grew up the eldest child of three in the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the Great Depression. His family was very poor and would frequently get their meals from neighbors and relatives. After catching Vaudeville shows with his father, Jerry expressed interest in becoming an actor. His father recommended work as a stagehand instead for more steady work, but Jerry pursued acting anyway, making ends meet by selling ice cream, washing windows, and mixing cement.

Seinfeld? What’s a Seinfeld?

Jerry Stiller has recounted the conversation when his agent called him and told him “They want you to play the father of George Costanza on ‘Seinfeld’.” In response, Jerry asked them, “Who’s Seinfeld?” A popular show running in its fifth season, there was some surprise that he had never heard of the show. What’s more—he originally passed because he had other engagements in a Broadway play, but they wanted him enough that they offered him the role again 6 months later.

Stiller Instinct

Jerry was replacing the previous actor of George Costanza’s father on the show. He was instructed to play the role as a submissive husband to the always shrill and outraged wife, Estelle Costanza. He figured things would go the same way and eventually HE would be replaced. Out of impulse one day on the set, the wife character was shouting away at him and instead of bearing it all as the script called for, Jerry snapped back at her and the reaction was wild. Showrunner, Larry David, agreed that this was the right spin for this character.

Press onward with your dreams in the face of adversity and “safe” choices as Jerry Stiller did throughout his life. Check out acting at your next summer camp stay and, as always, thanks for reading Camp Folks!

Lily E. Gets Silly

Hey, Camp Fans!

Having received more than 30 entries for our ‘Share Your Camp Story’ Contest here at Everything Summer Camp, we’re eager to publish each one of them right here on the Blog to share with all our readers! After our ten lucky prize winners, everyone else who submitted received a $15 gift certificate to our website!

Today’s post is from Lily E., who wrote in to tell us about her unforgettable camp stay this year at Camp Newaygo.

Hi my name is Lily and I am 7 years old. This year I went to Camp Newaygo and I had a very fun time. This was my 3rd time going, but the first time by myself. There I met some friends and we had a blast together. My counselors in cabin 9 were really nice. Their names were Audrey, Joyce, and Laura. At Camp Newaygo we do many activities. My favorites were fencing and animals. At camp we did Marshmallow paint war. It was fun but messy. Afterward we jumped in the lake to wash off. This will be a memory that I will never forget. To end our week at camp we had a cook out and we played a ton of gaga ball. In our free time we built a fairy house together. I hope it is still there when we come back next year. The last day I was sad, but I will always remember the fun time I had at Camp Newaygo in Cabin 9.

Glad to hear how much you loved your stay at Camp Newaygo, Lily! I’m glad that your first solo trip to summer camp went so well! Sometimes it’s even better when you head to camp on your own! It certainly doesn’t sound like you’ll be forgetting this summer in Cabin 9 any time soon! Thanks for sharing with us, Lily! For anybody else, if Camp Newaygo sounds like it could be a good match for you, give them a closer look by clicking here and, as always, thanks for reading!

Kayshav M. and the Camp Glow

Hey, Camp Fans!

We were delighted to see such a great response to our ‘Share Your Camp Story’ Contest here at Everything Summer Camp and now we’re eager to publish each one right here on the Blog! After our seven lucky winners, everyone else who submitted received a $15 gift certificate to our online store!

Today’s post is from Kayshav M., who wrote in to share about his first time building a fire while he was away at Camp Mowglis. Check it out:

It was one of my first days at Camp Mowglis when I went to do the camping industry. Mr. Team, one of the camping instructors helped us gather materials for the fire. We needed birch bark, hemlock twigs, tiny sticks, and maybe a log cabin (a cross of sticks that conceal the materials for the fire). Mr. Team lit the fire and a bit after that it started to rain and our fire started to go out, but Mr Soucop, a camper from Den, (the oldest dormitory in camp) helped and we kept the fire going for a while. After that we went back to our dorms because it was thundering. I was proud of the fire that we made and how we took materials and lit them and took care of the fire. I had many more campfires after that but that one was the most special because it was my first one!"

Thanks for this submission, Kayshav! It sounds like your very first fire really was something special as you kept it going even with the rain coming down! Sounds like a cool time with the thunder rolling in the distance! It’s great to hear that it was so memorable for you. Check out Camp Mowglis for yourself by clicking here if you’re interested in this camping experience and, as always, thanks for reading!

Writing Helps!

Posted on

Hello, Young Writers out there!

Kids all across the country love to get lost in a world that they create in their own mind and try to articulate that world from their imagination into written words to tell the story that they imagine happening within this make-believe world that they created. Creative Writing and the fun of fictional storytelling is a calling for tons of kids including yours truly—in fact, my summer camp experience was at a Creative Writing Camp when I was little!

Everyone knows that writing has its benefits. But what exactly are they? How does reading help sharpen our minds? Take a look at these four points about the health that reading provides and see what you can expect to get out of the experience if you want to participate at camp.

Sharpened Imagination
From world-building to character development, Creative Writing is all about drawing up outlines of your story and going down potential avenues for storylines to take—plot twists that work together with the story that’s been unraveled. And that’s just the beginning. Decisions must be made about whose perspective to tell the story from, when to reveal information about the story, how things will wind up. Crafting a story stretches your imagination and works your creative muscle!

Confidence

Being able to express yourself always feels good—especially when you’re able to do in a work of art that other people connect with. Our stories can say so much about us (not in words necessarily but just in the simple fact that we choose to write the stories that we do). Being able to express yourself in a way that’s beyond words is a very freeing experience and builds our self-assurance!

Increased Empathy

When you allow yourself to get lost in your own works of fiction, you build your ability to relate to others. In our fictional stories, we relate to our characters by the feelings and problems that the story makes them face. Caring about others transforms you into a more understanding and compassionate person. If you can relate to somebody you entirely made up, you can relate to anybody!

If you’re passionate about Creative Writing, then I recommend you find a summer camp that offers it as an activity to boost your techniques and skills with the written word. If you already have a camp in mind, call them up to ask about their Creative Writing program. And, as always, thanks for reading, Camp Fans!
