Hey, Summer Campers!

Everything Summer Camp loves everything about summer camp! That’s why we’re good friends with about 250 camps from all across the country! And I’m happy to tell you all about what excellent camps they are. We’re sliding our swinging our spotlight over to New Hampshire for a good look at this great girls camp who’s worked with us for a quite a while now.
YMCA Camp Nellie Huckins Girls Camp has shown girls the time of their lives with enriching and fulfilling activities that guide them onto a path of subtle but effective maturation. Located on the shores of the lovely Lake Ossipee in the town of Freedom, New Hampshire, these beautiful, remote campgrounds has been the home away from home for girls since 1928!

From third grade to first-year high schoolers, Nellie Huckins campers experience either two or four weeks of absolute fun and serious personal growth simply by being away from parents as well as the reputation that we all carry at home.

Huckins currently welcomes 1300 campers each year for awesome opportunities involving sports like Soccer, Volleyball, Tennis, Softball, Archery, Mountain Biking, Dance and Drama, Environmental Education, Hiking, Horseback Riding, Ropes Course, Swimming, Tennis, Waterskiing, Boating, as well as indoor fun like arts and crafts time, but indoor sports too, like basketball and street hockey or even air hockey, foosball, and ping-pong!

Ten campers are accompanied by two counselors in each of over 20 accommodating and comfortable cabins. With an excellent Dining Hall, Craftshop, Health Center, Program Office, Chapel, and more, Huckins is an attractive space to spend a portion of your summer, but even more than that—it’s a place to find yourself as well as some lifelong friends.

Hey, Campers!

Here at Everything Summer Camp, we learn about plenty of celebrities who were once summer campers like yourselves. It’s hard not to discover them when so many went to camp! We’ve talked about tons of pop stars, actors, athletes, entrepreneurs, and more on this Blog and today, we add Norah Jones to our list of Celebrities at Summer Camp! 

I can’t imagine anyone isn’t familiar with Norah Jones, but, in case I’m wrong, she’s that singer/songwriter and actress responsible for such hits as ‘Don’t Know Why’ and ‘Come Away With Me’. She’s won lots of awards (including nine Grammy Awards) and sold more than 50 million albums the world over.

But before any of that, she attended Interlochen Center for the Arts. Located in the beautiful northwestern region of lower Michigan, Norah spent her summer days soaking in the summer sun as it beat down on 1,200 acres of Interlochen, nestled between two lakes. But Norah Jones wasn’t her name back then. It was Geetali Norah Shankar.

And even before that, she was born in Brooklyn, but raised in Grapevine, Texas. She went to Colleyville Middle School and Grapevine High School until she later transferred to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas.

Previously she had sung at mass services during her weekly visits to church and, there, she discovered a passion for singing and so she took piano and voice lessons. But it was in her high school days that her love for music truly blossomed. She sang in the choir, participated in band, and played the alto saxophone too.

She went to the University of North Texas to further her study of music, majoring in jazz piano. She also spent her time there singing with the Jazz Singers group at the school. Fresh out of her graduation in 2002, Norah launched her solo music career with an original talent for lounge music. Every coffee shop was playing her album that year.

Hey, Camp Fans!

At Everything Summer Camp, we’re always putting our latest ideas to the test and broadcasting the news about ourselves, but we know it’s good to give others a chance in the spotlight too. That’s why we always take the time to spotlight the great summer camps with whom we’ve developed solid relationships. Today, we’re shining our spotlight on Camp Mystic in Texas. The scenic campgrounds at Camp Mystic are decorated with unobtrusive and attractive facilities—one of which (the historical Rec Hall) has been standing since the camp’s beginnings in 1927—including cabins that are comfortable and airy and have their own indoor bathrooms. There’s also the ‘Heaven Can Wait’ infirmary, the delicious Harrison Hall for mealtimes, as well as a camp office.

But Camp Mystic is about more than just fun times and gorgeous landscapes. This camp gives girls a clearer image of themselves—away from their established reputation back home. Girls at Camp Mystic undergo a transformative experience that takes a young child and sets her on a subtle road to maturity and self-actualization.
