History of Wheeled Luggage

Can you believe that before 1970 nobody had put wheels on luggage? And it took another 20 years after that to get a telescoping handle! But things really gained traction for this product when Macy’s Department Store picked up the invention, marketing it as ‘the luggage that glides’.

Since then, not much has really changed about duffels…until the Pop Up Soft Trunk, that is.

How did the Pop Up Trunk Come About?

An invention of our own, our Product Development team worked tirelessly to get the design just right, trying to defeat the frustrations over the formlessness of a duffel and the lack of organization from the single-compartment of a plastic bin.

Everything Summer Camp HAD to offer a duffel bag with summer campers in mind—something they could live out of! A soft trunk for camp! The team scratched their heads over all the things campers would use a duffel bag for. And after two years of development, more than 500 nights that became early mornings, 18 different prototypes, and way too much caffeine, Ed, Matt, Mark, and Brian proudly presented the Pop Up Soft Trunk to the world of summer camp!

What about the Pop Up Soft Trunk actually Pops?

Well, like the images of a pop-up book, the wire frame inside the fabric allows our trunk to POP up so it can function like a temporary dresser, bringing simplicity to life away from home! Position the frame securely in all four corners and the Pop Up Trunk holds a traditional trunk shape even when completely empty!

Duffel VS Soft Trunk for Camp—What’s the Difference?

In the summer camp world, there’s something called a soft trunk which is really just a duffel. Along with the advent of rolling luggage, the term ‘Duffel Bag’ has already been greatly stretched, but the Pop Up Trunk rolls with the best of them and brings even more to the table with its qualities of a footlocker. Campers can live out of it thanks to its organizational convenience and also collapse it for easy storage. My daughter loved this trunk!

This trunk is spacious with just enough bells and whistles to make it extra special. My daughter loved it, and I love that it packs away easy until next year. There was a small issue with the trunk when it arrived and the ESC customer service was amazing. Would definitely purchase from them again.

Big design flaw

We just spent the last hour trying to get one of the legs of the wire frame to stay up in advance of packing the trunk. Supposedly, according to the video on the site, there are tabs on the bottom of the trunk that help the legs stand up. As far as we can tell, these "tabs" are a couple of tiny pieces of vinyl, of insubstantial height, and on the side with the wheels they abut the wheel indentation, giving the wire frame nowhere to catch on the side of the "tabs" in order to stand up. I have no idea why there isn't some other more substantial piece of equipment for the wire frame to snap into on the bottom, which would seem like an easy fix. Anyway, this was very frustrating for our daughter, and there is no way the frame would stay up, and no way she could have done it herself at camp. Long story short: big waste of time -- now we have to deal with returning the trunk, and express ordering another trunk. Beware the talk of design innovation in the description. This thing is a dud.

Wonderful Design

My daughter was able to fit everything she needed for a 4 night camp, including her pillow and sleeping bag. This bag is well designed with clever compartments for everything. We especially appreciated the mirror and clear sleeve for photos. I love that it folds flat so we can store it under her bed. We also had a wonderful experience with customer service when the wrong item as accidentally delivered. They overnighted us the correct bag to ensure she had it in time. We are so pleased!
