Tips for Bunk Setup from Experienced Camp Families

Posted on

Make your bunk comfy, organized, and a little bit "you." These camper- and parent-tested tips cover comfort, storage, décor, and small extras that make cabin life easier.

Decorate Your Space

Bring decorations for your cabin. Nothing big—maybe some string lights or photos of family and friends for your bunk.

Setting Up Your Bunk

Comfort first! I bring a sheet, sleeping bag, blanket, and (for me) two pillows. Photos and string lights make it feel roomier. Keep your bunk clean—I keep a small box by my bed for books and activities.

Peace & Quiet With Headphones

Bring noise-canceling headphones in case you have a noisy bunkmate like me! (And don't be loud like me!)

Bring Entertainment

Long bus ride? Bring entertainment—sometimes they'll play a movie. Beds are usually thin twins. Pro tip: always call bottom bunk. Trust me!

Optimize Storage Space

Under-bed storage is key. Make sure your luggage fits underneath—even opened, if needed. I store my suitcase under the bed in two halves.

Personalize Your Bunk to Prevent Homesickness

Bring a few items from home—battery-operated fairy lights, family photos, and a small throw pillow. They add comfort during rest time and before bed.

Calming Your Homesickness

A cozy bed helps! Twinkle lights, photos, fun bedding she picked out and personalized, a journal with gel pens—quiet time in her bunk reminded her of the fun we had getting ready.

Extra Bed Sheets

Bring an extra set of sheets—changing them mid-session helps with sand and dirt.

Essential Items

Things you might not think to pack:

  • Extra water bottles
  • Glow sticks (night-light without bugs)
  • Labels—mark new store finds right away
  • Label everything
  • If allowed, a few snacks from home
  • Dryer sheets to help repel bugs—tuck in bags

Setting Up Your Bunk

I pack my trunk in reverse so the first-use items are on top. Make the bed first, then lights/lanterns/fans. Keep a laundry spot and small trash can. I live out of my trunk—shirts one side, pants & undergarments the other. I love hoodies, so I hang them on hooks.

Mattress Pad

Bring an egg-crate mattress pad. It turns any bunk into a cozy hangout—everyone will want to sit on your bed.

Egg Crate Foam

Camp mattresses are thin. If allowed, add an egg-crate or topper. Pack two sheet sets (even for a week) and a warm blanket or quilt—you'll be glad you did.

String Lights

Pack fun string lights, clip-on fans, or reading lights. Your bunk is your space—photos and items from home help. Don't forget tacks/tape and a pack of Command hooks.
